According to the latest news, Manchester City center-back John Stones is expected to be rewarded with a contract extension at the Etihad Stadium after his impressive return to the first-team squad.
After a mixture of fitness issues and injury throughout lockdown, Stones started the 2020/21 campaign behind four other center-backs in the City squad. Summer signings Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake joined Aymeric Laporte and youngster Eric Garcia as the main four that Guardiola rotated in different competitions.
According to Mike McGrath of The Telegraph, Manchester City defender John Stones is due to obtain a contract extension at the club. City’s international career in England appeared to be coming to an end, but a resurgence in recent months seems to have reignited the confidence of Pep Guardiola in the 26-year-old.
Garcia’s existence remains unclear in the club, and the Spaniard looked as if in the summer he was going to seal a transfer back to Barcelona, but at a critical point, the contract fell through. It is thought, though that Barcelona will go back in for the 19-year-old, and until the transfer window opens in the next fortnight, he will start negotiating a pre-contract with the club.
Stones has a full season left on his existing contract, and while there are still no specifics on the new contracts, at the beginning of the season it is already quite a change from how grim things seemed for him.
The defender of England struggled hard to get himself back into the plans of Guardiola, overcoming personal challenges and conditioning to get his form back on track. He has partnered so well with Rubben Dias and kept so many clean-sheets since he retired from injury this season.
Would you be glad if John Stones’ contract is being renewed? Your thoughts are important to us, and thanks as you do.
